Growing guides · Seedling care

Your seeds have sprouted—but when should seedlings leave their tray? This guide walks you through preparing a pot, moving a young plant and caring for it afterwards, whether you grow on a balcony or in a small home garden.

Start here

Prepare a pot with good drainage, move the root ball gently and water carefully. Then check moisture and introduce stronger light gradually.

When is a seedling ready?

Do not judge by age alone. Check the seed packet, true-leaf development and the space available for roots. NParks gives 4–8 leaves as a general transplanting guide, but your crop may have different requirements. See NParks’ guide to growing from seed.

True leaves follow the first seed leaves and resemble the mature plant’s foliage. University of Maryland explains seedling development.

What to prepare

  • A clean pot with unobstructed drainage holes.
  • A loose, well-draining potting mix suited to the plant.
  • A gentle watering can, a label and a small trowel.

Choose a pot that gives the roots some extra room. An oversized pot can leave too much wet growing medium around a small root system. The eventual container size depends on the crop; a small nursery pot may be an intermediate step. RHS explains how to choose a pot.

How to transplant, step by step

  1. Moisten first. Water the seedling before moving it and let excess water drain.
  2. Make a planting hole. Add growing medium and leave room for the root ball.
  3. Release gently. Squeeze the container while supporting the root ball. Avoid pulling the soft stem.
  4. Keep the right depth. For most seedlings, retain the original growing-medium level around the stem unless crop-specific instructions say otherwise. Backfill and firm lightly.
  5. Water gently and label. Make sure the pot drains, then add a plant label.

RHS describes handling and planting young plants.

Care after transplanting

Disturbed roots can cause temporary wilting. Protect the seedling from harsh light while it settles in. NParks explains transplant shock.

If the plant started indoors or in a sheltered position, introduce outdoor conditions gradually. University of Minnesota covers acclimatising seedlings.

Check the growing medium before watering again: aim for moist, not waterlogged. Do not keep adding water to an already wet pot or use concentrated fertiliser as a “rescue”. Follow the label for seedling feeding. See University of Maryland’s watering and feeding guidance.

Common questions

Do all seeds need to start in a tray?

No. Kangkong, for example, can be sown directly. Check the method for your crop before choosing a tray or pot. NParks lists direct-sowing examples.

Does a wilted seedling always need more water?

No. Transplanting can cause stress, and overly wet growing medium can also be a problem. Check moisture, drainage and light exposure before changing its care.
